The "Sayidat Al Jannah" scandal.

The Moroccan Cinema Centre will not issue a release visa for the film "Sayidat Al Jannah" (The Lady of Paradise) by Egyptian-born Australian director Eli King and former Kuwaiti writer Yasser Al Habib. Sidi Bou Saïd: The Land Art until June 12.

The first edition of La Land Art is held in different open and closed spaces of Sidi Bou Saïd. Open-air exhibitions, music and meetings are on the programme for the three days of festivities.

Born in the 1960s in the United States, Land Art is a trend in contemporary art that relies on artistic installation outside of conventional and compartmentalized spaces to be at one with nature. Sana Bennani's association Esprit libre launched the concept in Tunisia, and the event was inaugurated in the presence of the ministers of the environment, cultural affairs, and the mayors of Sidi Bou Saïd, Carthage and La Goulette.

Women artists were in the majority (Sonya Lakhoua, Achraf Ben Zoubir, Alya Khelifi, Sihem Berrich, Chiraz Belfekih, Mariem Kallel, Donia Ben Osman,...). Participants came from Djerba (Philippe Gorin, Isabela Canet, Philippe Leten, Neila Ziadi), Paris (Skander Guetari), Italy (Luigi Maria de Rubeis and Girolamo Palmizi) and other Mediterranean countries.

The winners of the festival:

  • The Grand Prize for Art is awarded to the artist Girolamo Palmizi for his work "La Piccola Sicila", a tribute to Tunisia.
  • The International Artist's Prize is awarded to Jamel Chaouki Mahdaoui (Tunisia), Luigi Maria De Rubeis (Italy), Hamadi Ben Neya (Tunisia) and Lena Gabsena (Georgia).
  • Two honourable mentions were awarded respectively to Mohamed Khalil Cherif for his unconditional support to the cultural action of Sidi Bou Said and to Ahmed Jalel Bennani for his collaboration to the success of the festival.

As part of the summer cultural programme of the Goethe Institute in Tunis, "Sommer Jazz" is being organised, a musical residency that will conclude with a tour in Tunis at the end of June.

Paris: "72 virgins" by Mehdi-Georges Lahlou.

At the Théâtre 14, Mehdi-Georges Lahlou continues to divert cultural, religious and moral references with his show "72 virgins", which is inspired by the myth of these women offered as a reward to martyrdoms. Mehdi-Georges Lahlou proposes a series of performative works featuring celestial creatures, the "houris".

This term is inspired by the one used by Moroccan playwright Youness Anzane, which referred to the promised virgins, but can also mean "with big black eyes" or "fruit". Based on the different interpretations of "houri" and the religious myth of the 72 virgins, Mehdi-Georges Lahlou has imagined a waiting room where one can find four women. This is the start of the show.

Before Theater 14, "72 virgins" was produced at the Centre dramatique national de Rouen and at the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles in Paris. Directed, written and installed by Mehdi-Georges Lahlou, with Pearl Manifold, Hala Omran, Ghita Serraj and Tamara Saade. Background music by the Lebanese-born Palestinian rapper Osloob.

Beirut: a look back at the Pole Dance Championship on May 29.

Projekt, the Beirut club of Jal el-Dib, organised with the Pole Fit Lebanon community the first pole dance championship of the country.

If Laura Ayoub, head of the Pole Fit Lebanon community, gave only one class per week in the Mar Mikhaël neighbourhood a few years ago, today they are six trainers and offer workshops and private classes in several halls in the capital. This shows the democratisation of this sport, which was once marginalised.

The championship competition was divided into three categories:

  • the juniors, which included all dancers under the age of 18;
  • amateurs, who have been training for two years or less
  • Semi-pros.

Each level competed in several sub-categories including pole art, pole drama and pole provocateur.

Beirut: extension of "Trial & Error", Yasmina Hilal's solo exhibition

Yasmina Hilal's first solo exhibition, "Trial & Error", presents her first large-scale collages based on her characteristic combination of alternative techniques with analogue photography and a series of 10 new collages on acetate paper.

Yasmina Hilal: "My process begins by photographing my subjects intimately on film. Each film is processed and digitised from start to finish. From there, it's all trial and error in terms of collage. I start using different techniques on my prints like cutting, sewing or stitching without ever relying on digital manipulation. This usually takes me a while and I don't mass produce. I focus on different techniques each time, stapling, using ink, printing on different types of paper, acetate paper, parchment paper etc. It's all about the textures for me. Textures and layers are important in my work."

Freelance photographer Yasmina Hilal has worked for L'Orient Le Jour, Dazed, Harper's Bazaar Arabia, Fashion Trust Arabia, NPR, Highsnobiety and Vice Arabia.

The Saudi Film Festival is coming to an end in Dharan.

The 8th edition of the festival was widely covered by the media, and much of it was broadcast on YouTube and shared on the festival's social networking pages.

The Saudi film "Quareer" - an anthology of five vignettes, each made by a different woman as part of their graduation project - was the winner of the festival.

Each story is about Saudi women who lived in the kingdom before the implementation of emancipatory policies. The five heroines, Raghid al-Nahdi, Norah Almowald, Ruba Khafagi, Fatma Alhazmi and Nour Alamir, broke records by winning four awards: Best Feature Film, Best Performance, Best Cinematography and the Jury Prize. They were awarded the Golden Palms, with a cash prize for each win.

UK-based Iraqi filmmaker and producer Koutaiba Al-Jabani ("Leaving Baghdad") chaired the main jury, which also included Saudi-Canadian actor and writer Aixa Kay ("Jasmine Road") and Egyptian filmmaker Ahmed Fawzi Saleh ("Poisonous Roses").

The Saudi Film Festival was founded by its pioneering artistic director Ahmed Al-Mulla in 2008, when cinema was still banned in Arabia for religious reasons and only took place intermittently. The event is now organised by the Dammam Culture and Arts Society in partnership with the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) in collaboration with the Saudi Cinema Association with the support of the Saudi Film Commission and the newly established Red Sea Film Festival.

Dubai: "Rose Tinted", Sara Naim's solo exhibition.

The Third Line presents Sara Naim's third solo exhibition at the gallery. "Rose Tinted" introduces a new body of work featuring photographs based on utopian scenes that don't entirely correspond with their sculpted forms. For the last time after six years, Naim uses plexiglass, wood and print in her wall and floor-based artworks, which contain imagery related to food, land, and objects depicted in an idealised form. The artist likes to work around the perception of reality, often distorted by our own projections and illusions. On view until 8 July 2022.

Sara Naim is a Syrian artist who grew up between Dubai and London. She received her MFA in Fine Art Media from the Slade School of Fine Art in London (2014), received her BA in Photography from the London College of Communication (2010) and her Foundation Art from Chelsea College of Art (2007). Naim is primarily interested in the notion of borders as a point of connection rather than division. Questioning different ways of seeing the invisible, her work explores the fine line between interiority and exteriority.

ICCROM Prize - Sharjah: winners announced.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the ICCROM Regional Office in Sharjah will award good practices in cultural heritage conservation and management in the Arab region in 2022. This biennial award aims to honour and reward outstanding work that contributes to the protection and vitality of tangible cultural heritage in the Arab world. It will highlight good practice in cultural heritage conservation and management in terms of the technical skills employed as well as the social and economic impact of the project on local communities.

HE Manal Ataya, Director-General of the Sharjah Museums Authority and Jury Chairperson for this year’s ICCROM-Sharjah Award, announced the two Grand Prize winners:
  • The Beirut Assist Cultural Heritage (BACH) project in Lebanon. The jury was impressed by the BACH project’s ability to mobilize individuals and institutions, including civil society, to rescue Beirut’s destroyed urban fabric following the 2020 port blast – including cultural spaces, such as museums, library collections and residential buildings – and redeem the memories these places hold.
  • The rehabilitation and restoration of residential courtyards and historical buildings in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem, Palestine. The jury was also struck by the Al Aqsa Mosque rehabilitation project’s systematic approach to making an impact on the families living in this historic, yet threatened, area. The project demonstrates the positive effect heritage conservation can have on healing.

In addition to the two Grand Prize awardees, the jury awarded special recognition to four additional projects:

  • Sheltering and Protecting Hisham's Palace’s Mosaic Floor, Jericho;
  • Revitalization and Conservation of the Cultural Heritage of Al Qarara Village, Gaza;
  • Digital Documentation of Historical Documents, Jerusalem; and
  • Collart-Palmyra: A comprehensive project on the Baalsahamîn temple in Palmyra, Syria.

Madrid: Casa Árabe opens the exhibition 'Light or Shadow of what was and still is'.

Casa Árabe presents this exhibition at its Madrid headquarters as part of the official programme of PhotoEspaña 2022, until the 25th of September 2022. The exhibition brings together the work of twelve photographers belonging to the artists' group Collective 1200, which emerged in Lebanon at the end of 2019 in response to a need to create networks of mutual support in a context of growing uncertainty. Two artists from the collective curated this exhibition: Tarek Haddad and Betty Ketchedjian.

Excerpt from the press release of the event: "The exhibition begins in a space of indefinite time, confusing past, present and an uncertain future. It is built upon an oxymoron: the idea of a progressive loop which creates the sensation of evolution and déjà vu, though it always ends up taking us back to the same starting point. Movement becomes motionless, human presence becomes absent, tranquility becomes morbid. Here, the axis of time takes the form of a spiral in which our lives seem to spin endlessly, history repeats itself over and over again, and a feeling of stagnation is imminent. Trees, broken glass, billboards, the port of Beirut and other items are spread throughout the different works, acting as clues to the fact that, no matter what your subjective, personal experience may be, the larger narrative of the past few years in Lebanon has been shared by the majority, regardless of the differences in society or in their daily lives."

The artists in the exhibition: Myriam Boulos, Manu Ferneini, Omar Gabriel, Paul Gorra, Elsie Haddad, Tarek Haddad, Betty Ketchedjian, Rima Maroun, Laura Menassa, Roger Mokbel, Walid Nehme and Ieva Saudargaite Douaihi.

Madrid: Mounir Fatmi at Casa Árabe.

"The Blinding Light" exhibition, on display until the 18th of September, is an artistic project by Mounir Fatmi. It is inspired by the healing of the deacon Justinian. In this scene, the Arab brothers perform the miracle of healing the deacon by transplanting the leg of a recently deceased Ethiopian. This scene evokes the mixing of a white body with a black limb, but also the living with the dead, thus questioning notions of race, cultural mixing and identity.

To address the representation of this event, Mounir Fatmi has produced a series of photomontages throughout his career (the first of which dates from 2013) containing several images of an operating theatre. Thus, the medical staff is placed next to the two saints, forming a single working group. As a result, the ghosts and the living are present in another form of reality, a fantastic temporality as miraculous as the biblical scene itself.Mounir Fatmi's idea is to combine spheres of belief often perceived as antagonistic. On one hand, science, order, reason and the tangible; on the other hand, religion, the miraculous and the sacred.

"عيب" by Sarah Bahbah Sarah Bahbah is a Palestinian Jordanian artist and director born and raised in Australia. Raised by Immigrant parents, her culturally conservative upbringing led to a great rebellion of Art. Over the past decade Bahbah has become renowned for her signature style, giving birth to visually striking, culture-shifting stories that combine her most intimate psyche appearing as subtitles placed over cinematic stills. Bahbah’s art explores the power of vulnerability by way of giving voice to the vast spectrum of chaos and desire in imperfect relationships. She believes in embracing emotional vulnerability to break taboos and celebrate the liberation of guilt and shame. In 2020 Bahbah released her most impactful series yet titled “3ieb!” in Arabic / “Shame On Me!” in English; a series where she provocatively posed in front of the camera for the first time, expressing her desire for sexual liberation from her cultural restrictions. The subtitles appeared in both English and Arabic calligraphy which caused an uproar within the MENA community, while simultaenously giving voice to many women who held the same desire. Bahbah’s work has been featured in countless publications including New York Times, Forbes, Business Insider, The Cut, Vogue US, Hollywood Reporter, Vice and many more. In 2023 Bahbah released her first ever luxury fine art book, "Dear Love".

His project recounts the hopes and dreams of Palestinians, shattered by poverty and fences. Most of the photos were taken at the Rafah crossing, which links Gaza to Egypt. @dyaladesigns "As cliché as it may sound, I've always been creative. Somehow I always knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I've never been that passionate about anything other than art and design, so why would I spend my life doing something I didn't really love? It's my passion and I intend to use my creativity to make a difference in this world." "As a Palestinian artist, I definitely feel a responsibility to use my platform to highlight the ongoing conflicts and express my emotions about them in a beautiful way. Art is my passion, and my country is my passion, so combining these two aspects of my life is something that excites and motivates me. My work is a reflection of who I am, and I think it's important to represent people who feel that their voices aren't always heard. I want people to look at my work and see the beauty and relevance of who they are and where they come from. I feel it's our global duty to show our support and unite in times of need. I feel that my work highlights the importance of acceptance and inclusion. Given the world we live in today, where people are bombarded by an unrealistic digital society, my art plays a role in breaking down those boundaries and redefining those expectations." "A boy eating watermelon", Adam Rouhana “There are a number of things that come to mind when I look at this image and, honestly, it’s about the boy… It’s sort of like he’s making love to the watermelon, right? That is what it looks like. So, it’s this idea, I guess, of a passion for the land and his own relationship with the land. You can see he’s in this kind of olive grove and the earth is around him." N.B. The watermelon is a symbol of Palestine. Adam Rouhana is a young Palestinian photographer who graduated from Oxford. He grew up in Boston. Each year, he returns to his homeland with his camera, and focuses on Palestinian youth, which represents half the population. A soldier, a fence, a football pitch, but also laughter, somersaults on the beach and back to school moments. The young photographer, who plans his first exhibition with curators Zainab Hasoon and Sara bin Safwan at the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, captures these everyday infrastructures, characters and emotions of Palestine. He claims the "permission to narrate" developed by Edward Saïd - in other words, the commitment to sharing an individual rather than a collective story, not dictated by an oppressive regime or locked into a given prism such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Adam Rouhana therefore offers new perspectives and new narratives of Palestine. ‘Instead of reproducing the representations of occupied Palestine that are so ubiquitous and so obvious, I was able to capture the quieter moments and try to work to create new representations of Palestine’ – Adam Rouhana

"Climbing walls", Khaled Hourani Born in Hebron, he is an artist, writer, commentator, curator, and a critical voice in Palestine. Operating within a socially and politically constrained system, Hourani conveys his awareness of the nuances and vagaries that permeate different aspects of social encounters in Palestine. In his pivotal 2011 project ‘Picasso in Palestine’, Hourani borrowed Picasso’s ‘Buste de Femme’ from the Van Abbemuseum in The Netherlands, to display it in Ramallah. The symbol was powerful knowing the piece was painted during WW2. What was already an unusual lending process turned into a political quagmire considering that Palestine was not - and still isn’t - internationally recognised as a state, therefore making it impossible to insure the piece. The painting had to be militarily guarded: no insurance company took the risk. Picasso’s painting was exhibited in a specific room, always with two guards. This photograph was taken at the time, and has since been exhibited multiple times, also under surveillance. A mise en abyme revealing the complexity and constant struggle of a life under occupation.

"Women sleeping" by Malak Mattar "Being a feminist is not about hating men; it's about believing that men and women don't have to compete with each other, but that they complement each other. This harmony can exist between two genders when there is equality and recognition of each other's roles and abilities, without degrading anyone's status." Malak Matar was born in 1999 in the Gaza Strip. She started painting in 2014 to escape the aggression and violence she and her family experienced daily while living in the Gaza Strip. Her first solo exhibition, which she organised a year later at the age of fifteen, enabled her to forge links with international journalists and gain recognition for her work on social networks. After winning the distinction of best high school student in the Gaza Strip (and second best in the whole of Palestine), Malak Matar left Gaza in 2017 to study political science in Turkey. "Palest*n*ans: a story of displacement and pain. For decades, the world has been a silent witness to their displacement, the bombing of their refuge and the loss of loved ones. Today, with no access to food, water or medicine, they are faced with the agonising decision to leave the land they hold dear, with the uncertainty of their return, or quite simply, to die. Their story is part of the wider story of refugees around the world.
