Unesco to help Morocco inventory post-earthquake damage

"A Unesco mission visited the medina of Marrakech this afternoon. Our organisation will support the Moroccan authorities in inventorying the damage in the fields of heritage and education, making buildings safe and preparing for reconstruction" - Audrey Azoulay, Director of Unesco, on X (formerly Twitter).

An earthquake measuring 7 degrees on the Richter scale struck the city of Marrakech, killing more than 3,000 people.

The medina of Marrakech, founded in 1070-1072 and for a long time "a major political, economic and cultural centre of the Muslim West, reigning over North Africa and Andalusia", has been a World Heritage Site since 1985, according to UNESCO.
