The prestigious prize, created in 1977, is awarded in five categories: service to Islam, Islamic studies, Arabic language and literature, medicine and science. This 45th edition, awarded COVID-19 vaccine developers, nanotechnology scientists and eminent personalities in each of its categories of Arabic language and literature, Islamic studies and service to Islam.
The winners:
- Morocco: writer and critic Abdelfattah Kilito received the King Faisal Prize for Arabic Language and Literature. The prize was awarded for his work "Ancient Arabic Narrative and Modern Theories", which, according to the jury, presented the Arabic narrative to the general public in a clear and precise manner, and interpreted ancient Arabic narratives with brilliance. Abdelfattah Kilito is an Arabic and French-speaking intellectual whose favourite subject is the renewal of Arabic literary studies.
- The 2023 King Faisal Prize for Services to Islam is awarded jointly to Shaikh Nasser bin Abdullah of the United Arab Emirates and Professor Choi Young Kil-Hamed of South Korea.
- The 2023 King Faisal Prize for Medicine, focusing on pandemics and vaccine development, is awarded jointly to Professor Dan Hung Barouch from the United States and Professor Sarah Catherine Gilbert from the United Kingdom.
- The 2023 King Faisal Prize for Science in Chemistry is awarded jointly to Professor Jackie Yi-Ru Ying and Professor Chad Alexander Mirkin, both from the US.
