Written and directed by Hassan El Jaï, the play recounts the tragic legend of the thwarted love of two children from the Arabian desert, Qays and Layla. When fate opposes their union, Qays, mad with grief, goes into exile in the desert among the wild beasts, declaiming his love to all winds. He thus receives the nickname Majnûn ("the madman" in Arabic), which symbolises the passion for love that is only fulfilled in annihilation.
