Saad Almotham mixed his literary work with artwork provided by a group of 56 Saudi and Arab artists to create a book that is an art project in itself, titled “Sauce of Mango.”

Made up of a hundred short fables, written in Arabic and showcasing 96 artworks, it began in 2012 when Almotham found his niche, initially using Twitter to share the stories in 140 and, later, 280 characters.

It was after posting 200 stories that Almotham got the idea of compiling them in a book. He selected 100, and decided on the title after the main character from one short fable.

With the help of artists through the "Fitrh Art platform", he was able to have a unique and distinct piece of art for most of his literary works. "Fitrh Art" is a platform that serves as a home to Arab artists interested in being part of a storytelling adventure. Once the book was complete, the author organised an online art exhibition in collaboration with the Fitrh Art platform, where they showcased the artwork with the stories as a description. Almotham is currently working on the English translation of the book and hopes to publish it soon.

Jean Paul Gaultier Celebrates the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's 91st National Day.

In the spirit of revelry and a nod to local custom, Jean Paul Gaultier has brought to life the game of baloot through film. The widely popular card game of baloot deeply embedded in the everyday lives of locals and the culture of the kingdom gives a Gaultier twist to the film’s story and treatment, entirely shot by an all-Saudi production team in Riyadh.

Equal parts of innocent fun and trickery are portrayed by the two teams competing in baloot, composed of some of Saudi’s most talent profiles: up-and-coming actress Sarah Taibah and emerging fashion model Domie Alsalim emerge as baloot winners, with fashion and beauty multi-hyphenates Yara Alnamlah and Faisal Alghazzawi rising to the card game’s challenge. The celebrations are further immortalized with the baloot box; a luxe green velvet box stamped in gold with “Jean Paul Gaultier Loves Saudi Arabia”, encased with baloot components designed and created in collaboration with Saudi Arabian artisans.

A deck of cards is exquisitely designed by Raghad Al-Ahmad. Al-Ahmad intuitively merged Jean Paul Gaultier’s signature iconography with cultural motifs rooted in the identity of Saudi Arabia through the artform of collage: the Queen, King, and Jack are reimagined as the bint, shebbah and walad, to represent the regions and cities in Saudi Arabia.

The baloot box is finally packed in a special green bag with gold-embroidered bisht straps, thoughtfully patterned after the intricate gold trimming of the traditional Saudi bisht. The bag was designed and created with Atharna and traditional Saudi Arabian tailor, Salman Alhamad. Atharna is a social enterprise dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Saudi Arabian crafts and culture, who worked with Alhamad, a Saudi bisht tailor from Al Ahsa.

SWALIF: the new Emirati publishing house.

The founder of "SWALIF" (conversation in Arabic), Salem Al Suwaidi, decided on creating a publishing house after discussing with the mainstream academic discourse carried out by "privileged-white men"- (in the words of Salem Al Suwaidi) with university friends. The 20-year-old entrepreneur wanted to give a voice to the youth in the region. “A lot of rhetoric that I’ve heard in academia celebrates the West’s progressiveness, capitalistic drive, its fortunes and individualistic spirit, but doesn't acknowledge the fact that the Middle East still has the time and opportunity to develop as much. There’s a lot of collectivism in the Middle East that prevents individuals from self-actualising … We need to allow ourselves to evolve and change without fear. I’m not saying we should follow the West’s programme. We should be able to develop our relative path.” Salem Al Suwaidi. The publishing house's first book, "Encapsulated Volume 1: Photo Essays on Khaleejiness", has just been published. It includes the works of 16 photographers from the Gulf, detailing their reflections on the meanings of Khaleeji identity in visual and textual forms, and also including commentary from SWALIF’s editors and contributors. "Encapsulated Volume 1" is accompanied by an exhibition, currently on view at Manarat Al Saadiyat’s Photography Studio. It features 11 artists from the book.

SWALIF is already sparking conversation, not only with its book, but also with its podcast, "Shul’ Salfa", which translates as “what’s going on?”.

The episodes feature interviews with artists from "Encapsulated Volume 1".

SWALIF is currently self-funded.

Architect Sumaya Dabbagh created the Mosque of the late Mohamed Abdulkhaliq Gargash in Al Quoz (Dubai), which is one of the first mosques designed by a woman in the United Arab Emirates.

Sumaya Dabbagh, the founder of Dabbagh Architects, grew up in Saudi Arabia and studied her craft in the UK and Paris before moving to the UAE.

Ms Dabbagh previously cut her teeth on cultural projects, including the Mleiha Archaeological Centre in Sharjah. The project was awarded an Architecture MasterPrize (2020), among others, and was nominated for the Aga Khan Awards (2018).

Many elements in the design of the Gargash Mosque are not usual ones. There are no traditionally shaped windows - a design quirk which took time for the planners to accept, and the minbar where the imam stands to lead the prayers is set to one side, leaving the mihrab niche empty bar as a shard of light from an overhead skylight. Furthermore, the minaret is designed as a separate body, just apart from the main mosque building. The architect placed sustainability at the heart of the project, sourcing the cladding and aluminium locally, and the stone from Oman.

Architect Carl Gergès adds his own touch to the Institute of the Arab World in Paris.

The architect (and member of the music group Mashrou 'Leila) was invited to design the scenography of the Institute's new exhibition "Lights of Lebanon", and redesign the "Espace des Donateurs" (Donors' place) which hosts the event.

The architect reinvented the space with the idea of representing the Arab world as a whole. He decided to use soil, the colour of which unites all countries in the region. "I realised that the colour of the land binds us, Arabs, together. The photos I came across, taken in Luxor or in Palmyra, could have been taken in Baalbek. The soil's colour is a sort of common background."

Carl Gergès decided to create this space with a 100% Lebanese team, knowing that the exhibit would be about Lebanese contemporary and modern art.

The ancient artefact has immense cultural and historical value. It contains portions of the "Epic of Gilgamesh," considered one of the oldest works of literature in human history, which tells the story of a powerful Mesopotamian king on a quest for immortality.

Some 17,000 antique artefacts were already returned to Iraq from the United States in July. The pieces mostly dated from the Sumerian period, some 4,000 years ago, one of the oldest civilisations in Mesopotamia.

"عيب" by Sarah Bahbah Sarah Bahbah is a Palestinian Jordanian artist and director born and raised in Australia. Raised by Immigrant parents, her culturally conservative upbringing led to a great rebellion of Art. Over the past decade Bahbah has become renowned for her signature style, giving birth to visually striking, culture-shifting stories that combine her most intimate psyche appearing as subtitles placed over cinematic stills. Bahbah’s art explores the power of vulnerability by way of giving voice to the vast spectrum of chaos and desire in imperfect relationships. She believes in embracing emotional vulnerability to break taboos and celebrate the liberation of guilt and shame. In 2020 Bahbah released her most impactful series yet titled “3ieb!” in Arabic / “Shame On Me!” in English; a series where she provocatively posed in front of the camera for the first time, expressing her desire for sexual liberation from her cultural restrictions. The subtitles appeared in both English and Arabic calligraphy which caused an uproar within the MENA community, while simultaenously giving voice to many women who held the same desire. Bahbah’s work has been featured in countless publications including New York Times, Forbes, Business Insider, The Cut, Vogue US, Hollywood Reporter, Vice and many more. In 2023 Bahbah released her first ever luxury fine art book, "Dear Love".

"I'm 33 and I've never been on a plane" It took five years for Abdel Rahman Zagout, a Gazan photographer, to complete a project on the Egyptian border with Gaza, which won the 2018 Red Cross photography competition. This photograph is part of the project, portraying a young Palestinian at the border, his hands open in front of a closed window. Abdel Rahman Zagout graduated in media at Al-Aqsa University and graduated in 2008. He worked for ten years as a freelance photojournalist and photography consultant. His project recounts the hopes and dreams of Palestinians, shattered by poverty and fences. Most of the photos were taken at the Rafah crossing, which links Gaza to Egypt. It is considered to be the main exit from Gaza, and is only opened sporadically.

@dyaladesigns "As cliché as it may sound, I've always been creative. Somehow I always knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I've never been that passionate about anything other than art and design, so why would I spend my life doing something I didn't really love? It's my passion and I intend to use my creativity to make a difference in this world." "As a Palestinian artist, I definitely feel a responsibility to use my platform to highlight the ongoing conflicts and express my emotions about them in a beautiful way. Art is my passion, and my country is my passion, so combining these two aspects of my life is something that excites and motivates me. My work is a reflection of who I am, and I think it's important to represent people who feel that their voices aren't always heard. I want people to look at my work and see the beauty and relevance of who they are and where they come from. I feel it's our global duty to show our support and unite in times of need. I feel that my work highlights the importance of acceptance and inclusion. Given the world we live in today, where people are bombarded by an unrealistic digital society, my art plays a role in breaking down those boundaries and redefining those expectations." "A boy eating watermelon", Adam Rouhana “There are a number of things that come to mind when I look at this image and, honestly, it’s about the boy… It’s sort of like he’s making love to the watermelon, right? That is what it looks like. So, it’s this idea, I guess, of a passion for the land and his own relationship with the land. You can see he’s in this kind of olive grove and the earth is around him." N.B. The watermelon is a symbol of Palestine. Adam Rouhana is a young Palestinian photographer who graduated from Oxford. He grew up in Boston. Each year, he returns to his homeland with his camera, and focuses on Palestinian youth, which represents half the population. A soldier, a fence, a football pitch, but also laughter, somersaults on the beach and back to school moments. The young photographer, who plans his first exhibition with curators Zainab Hasoon and Sara bin Safwan at the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, captures these everyday infrastructures, characters and emotions of Palestine. He claims the "permission to narrate" developed by Edward Saïd - in other words, the commitment to sharing an individual rather than a collective story, not dictated by an oppressive regime or locked into a given prism such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Adam Rouhana therefore offers new perspectives and new narratives of Palestine. ‘Instead of reproducing the representations of occupied Palestine that are so ubiquitous and so obvious, I was able to capture the quieter moments and try to work to create new representations of Palestine’ – Adam Rouhana

"Climbing walls", Khaled Hourani Born in Hebron, he is an artist, writer, commentator, curator, and a critical voice in Palestine. Operating within a socially and politically constrained system, Hourani conveys his awareness of the nuances and vagaries that permeate different aspects of social encounters in Palestine. In his pivotal 2011 project ‘Picasso in Palestine’, Hourani borrowed Picasso’s ‘Buste de Femme’ from the Van Abbemuseum in The Netherlands, to display it in Ramallah. The symbol was powerful knowing the piece was painted during WW2. What was already an unusual lending process turned into a political quagmire considering that Palestine was not - and still isn’t - internationally recognised as a state, therefore making it impossible to insure the piece. The painting had to be militarily guarded: no insurance company took the risk. Picasso’s painting was exhibited in a specific room, always with two guards. This photograph was taken at the time, and has since been exhibited multiple times, also under surveillance. A mise en abyme revealing the complexity and constant struggle of a life under occupation.

"Women sleeping" by Malak Mattar "Being a feminist is not about hating men; it's about believing that men and women don't have to compete with each other, but that they complement each other. This harmony can exist between two genders when there is equality and recognition of each other's roles and abilities, without degrading anyone's status." Malak Matar was born in 1999 in the Gaza Strip. She started painting in 2014 to escape the aggression and violence she and her family experienced daily while living in the Gaza Strip. Her first solo exhibition, which she organised a year later at the age of fifteen, enabled her to forge links with international journalists and gain recognition for her work on social networks. "Palest*n*ans: a story of displacement and pain. For decades, the world has been a silent witness to their displacement, the bombing of their refuge and the loss of loved ones. Their story is part of the wider story of refugees around the world.
