A flagship event of the Arab Cinema and Media Institute, the Arab Film Festival is the oldest and largest independent festival of its kind in North America. Launched in 1996, the festival’s mission is to present the best contemporary films that highlight the richness of Arab culture through authentic stories and images, offering a glimpse into the beauty and complexity of the Arab world.
The 28th edition takes place from October 24 to November 3, 2024, both in-person across the San Francisco Bay Area and online. The full lineup can be found here. The festival will be opened by the film A Letter to Gaza by Mohamed Jabaly, produced by Watermelon Pictures, the new production company launched by Alana Hadid, which focuses on Palestinian independent cinema. The autobiographical film, Life is Beautiful, which was recently awarded at the Geneva Human Rights Festival, tells the story of a Palestinian filmmaker stranded in Norway and unable to return to see his family in Gaza.
Mohamed Jabaly est un réalisateur, producteur et artiste palestinien originaire de la ville de Gaza. Il est arrivé en Norvège en 2014 et s’est depuis fait un nom dans l’industrie cinématographique internationale. Son premier long métrage documentaire, Ambulance, a été présenté dans plusieurs des plus grands festivals de cinéma du monde et a remporté plusieurs prix. Il s’agit notamment du One World Media Award du meilleur long métrage documentaire aux BAFTA en 2017, du BBC Arabic Young Journalist Award, du SunBird Award aux Days of Cinema in Palestine, du FIPA D’or Award et du Jury Award du meilleur documentaire au FIPA de Biarritz, en France, en 2017. En plus de son travail dans le cinéma, Mohamed a animé des ateliers de réalisation pour les jeunes et a fait partie du jury de plusieurs festivals de cinéma. Actuellement, il poursuit ses études de maîtrise en beaux-arts à l’Académie nationale des arts d’Oslo. Il est titulaire d’une licence en images animées du Nordland Film & Art College dans le nord de la Norvège. En 2019, il rejoint la production de Stray Dogs en tant que réalisateur et sort « Life is Beautiful » en 2023.
The opening night will feature special performances by Palestinian artist Llunr and Palestinian rapper MC Abdul.
