The ancient kingdom of Sheba in Yemen inscribed on UNESCO's list of World Heritage in Danger

The Highlands of the Ancient Kingdom of Sheba, in the governorate of Marib (west-central Yemen), comprise seven archaeological sites "which bear witness to the rich Sheban kingdom and its architectural, aesthetic and technological achievements from the 1st millennium BCE to the arrival of Islam around 630 CE" - Unesco press release.

The site is under threat due to the conflict that has devastated Yemen since 2014 between Iranian-backed Houthi militiamen and pro-government forces backed by a Saudi-led military coalition.

List of Yemeni places classified by Unesco:

  • Historic City of Zabid (2000);
  • Ancient City of Shibam and its Wall (2015);
  • Old City of Sana'a (2015);
  • High places of the ancient kingdom of Saba, Marib (2023).
