Sundance Festival: Sofia Alaoui wins first prize

After getting the award for her short film "And if the goats die" in 2020, Sofia Alaoui returns to the Sundance Festival with her first feature film. The French-Moroccan director won the Jury Prize on Saturday 28 January for her film "Animalia".

Synopsis: "Pregnant Itto looks forward to the return of her husband, Amine, to his wealthy family. But when the country is placed in a state of emergency and strange weather events occur, Itto unexpectedly finds the possibility of a new emancipation."

"Animalia" is produced by Dounia Benjelloun of Dounia Production and Jiango Film with the support of the Moroccan Film Centre, and by Toufik Ayadi of Srab Films. Already bought by the TV channels Arte and Canal+, the film should be released this year.

In addition, in the MENA region, the films "The Persian Version" by Maryam Keshavarz and "Shayda" by Noora Niasari respectively won the Audience Award and the Waldo Salt Award for Screenwriting in the American Drama Competition, and the Audience Award in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition.
